Perge

Perge was a leading city of ancient Pamphylia, built on level ground in the district of Aksu, a short drive east of central Antalya. Flat terrain and wide streets make it one of the easier ruins in the region to explore, and a half-day visit from Antalya is comfortable.

Near the entrance is the stadium, among the best preserved in Anatolia; look at the vaulted rooms under the seating that once served as shops. Pass through the Roman gate to reach the Hellenistic gate with its two round towers, the city's emblem. Behind it runs the colonnaded street, with a water channel down its centre and shops along both sides, leading to the agora, the large baths and a monumental fountain at the far end. The theatre is temporarily closed for restoration, so check its status before you go. Plan on one and a half to two hours.

There is almost no shade, and Antalya summers are fierce: come early with a hat and water. Many of the finest statues found here, including the sculpture of emperors and gods, are displayed in the Antalya Museum, which makes a good follow-up visit.
