How to use this map

The map brings together 3,173 museums and archaeological sites. Search by name, pick a province or a type, and switch between the list and the map; both always show the same results. The filters stay in the address bar, so you can bookmark a search or send it to someone.

The records come from Wikidata and OpenStreetMap and the photos from Wikimedia Commons. We add nothing by guesswork: if a museum has no opening hours on OpenStreetMap, the page says so instead of inventing them. Right now 186 entries have hours. The data was last refreshed in September 2026 and is updated once a year.

"Open now" is worked out in your browser from the OpenStreetMap hours, using Istanbul time wherever you are. Public holidays are not in that data, so on a holiday always check the museum's own website.

The Museum Pass badge is shown on 255 entries: those Wikidata lists as run or owned by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, those whose official website is on muze.gov.tr, and the most visited places we checked by hand. Some sections of certain sites need a separate ticket, and a Ministry museum can be missing the badge, so confirm on the official list.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Museum Pass work?
The Museum Pass (Müzekart) works at museums and sites run by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. On this site the badge appears on entries that Wikidata lists as run or owned by the Ministry, on entries whose official website is on muze.gov.tr, and on places we checked by hand. Some sections of certain sites are not covered. The Museum Pass page has the full list and the exceptions we know of; confirm on the official list before you go.
How up to date are the opening hours?
Hours come from OpenStreetMap and the data is refreshed once a year; every museum page shows the data date. Volunteers update OpenStreetMap all the time, but a change made there reaches this site with the next refresh. Hours can differ on public holidays. Before an important visit, check the museum's official website.
What does the "Free" badge mean?
It appears where OpenStreetMap marks a place as having no admission fee, or where we checked by hand. It never appears on a place marked as paid on OpenStreetMap. Temporary exhibitions at a free museum may still charge. The full list is on the Free Museums page.
Where does the data come from?
Museum and site records are compiled from Wikidata (CC0) and OpenStreetMap (ODbL), photos from Wikimedia Commons, and short descriptions from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA). The most popular museums have texts we wrote ourselves. The Methodology page explains which source feeds which field; licences and credits are on the Sources page.
How do I report a missing or wrong museum?
Every museum page has a "Wrong information?" line that opens the contact form with the museum's name filled in. You can fix hours and locations directly on OpenStreetMap, and the change reaches this site with the next data update. You can also suggest a museum that is not listed at all through the Contact page.
Can I use the photos?
The photos belong to their photographers, not to us. All are published on Wikimedia Commons under free licences (CC0, public domain, CC BY or CC BY-SA). To reuse one, follow the link under the photo to its Commons page and give the credit that its licence requires.
